What is Tari Kecak ?

 

Tari Kecak is usually referred to as “Cak” or Fire Dance is a mass dance performances describing the role of “Lakon Pewayangan” Rama and Sita and Kecak is not specifically used in Hindu religious rituals i.e. worship, temple ceremony and other ceremonies. Tari Kecak dancers may get…  into trance so they are resistant to open fire flame. This makes Kecak more interesting to the audience.

Lakon = noun, role.

Wayang = noun, puppet.

Pewayangan = about puppet.

Tari Kecak Uniqueness.
Unlike other Balinese dance with gamelan music as an accompaniment, Tari Kecak performance integrates the art of vocal yelling “cak cak cak kee…  cak cak kee …” that is why it is called Tari Kecak.

 

Where to see Tari Kecak ?

Tari Kecak  can found in several places in Bali,while the one in Uluwatu is the most interesting to watch because you can see a sunset simultaneously.

Tari Kecak diciptakan pada tahun 1930-an oleh Wayan Limbak yang bekerja sama dengan pelukis Jerman Walter Spies berdasarkan tradisi Sanghyang dan bagian-bagian kisah Ramayana. Wayan Limbak memopulerkan tari ini saat berkeliling dunia bersama rombongan penari Bali-nya.

The history of Tari Kecak.

Tari Kecak  was created in the 1930s by Wayan Limbak who worked with German painter Walter Spies, based on the Sanghyang traditions and parts of the Ramayana story. Wayan Limbak popularized this dance while traveling around the world with his Balinese dancers group.

In addition to the Ramayana story, there are popular titles and themes which are often performed :
– Kecak Subali and Sugriva, was created in 1976.
– Kecak Dewa Ruci, was created in 1982.
Both were the work of Mr. I Wayan Dibia.
