What is Barong ?

Barong is a character in Balinese mythology. He is the king of the spirits and symbolizes goodness. He is an enemy of Rangda in the Balinese mythology. Banas Pati Rajah is the spirit that accompany a child in his life. Banas Pati Rajah is believed to be the spirit that drives the Barong. As a protective spirit,…  Barong is often shown as a lion. Balinese traditional dance-drama depicting the battle between the Barong and Rangda are very popular and frequently performed as a tourist attraction.

Barong Singa is one of five Barong types. In every part of the island of Bali has a protective spirit to the land and forest respectively. Each Barong from a particular area is described as representing a different animal. There are wild boar, tiger, snake or dragon, and lion. Barong Singa is very popular and originated from Gianyar. Here lies Ubud, which is a famous tourist place. In Calonarong or Balinese dance, Barong uses his magical power to defeat Rangda.

Barong types.

Barong Macan is most commonly found in Bali. In Bali each region is believed to have its own guardian spirit in the forest or land. Each of these protective spirit portrayed in certain animal forms which are:

Barong Ket: lion barong, most common and represents the spirit of goodness.
Barong Landung: monster barong, Chinese culture influenced.
Barong Celeng: boar shaped barong.
Barong Macan: tigershaped barong.
Barong naga: dragon shaped barong.
